I know it sounds sort of dramatic to say taking classes here have changed my life, but they certainly have added a new dimension since my retirement. I was never in a play or theater or acted in my life, but kinda always secretly had the desire to be a Broadway star. I never liked stand-up comedians, but always enjoyed the originality and spontaneity of Improv that I had seen on TV like “whose line is it anyway”, or the groundlings. Well, these series of classes have provided the opportunity for me to start to learn a new skill and craft in a supportive and non-judgmental atmosphere. Every class is full of fun and laughs. There is no pressure to memorize or learn lines, merely encouragement to silence your own inner critic and allow spontaneity and ideas that may float through your head to express themselves. I started with Improv One and finished the first series which included all the way through Improv Four. Now I’ve just completed my advanced class number two, and was part of a 20 min. Class performance! . The summer provided the opportunity to take many many workshops. One of the best things about this place is their commitment to social causes and inclusivity. Check out their website. And who knew that this 67-year-old could have so much fun with 20 and 30 year olds for two hours a week. I’ve had folks to my house for informal get-togethers and it is so refreshing to get the perspective of the younger generation -gifting me with more hope for the future. . Thank you to Pam Scott and Maddy for their genius, hard work professionalism and creating an atmosphere of acceptance. They have shows on Friday nights and Saturday nights which have become a regular routine for me several times a month. Check them out -it’s cheaper than going to a movie.
A hidden gem of the Valley! Whether you are a seasoned or new improviser, or just a fan of comedy and community, Happier Valley Comedy is a great place for classes, workshops, and to enjoy an improv show on a night out. Check it out, and you will definitely come back for more.
