Funniest Cities in America: The 2025 Data-Driven Rankings

Which city is the funniest in America? We ranked 221 cities using comedy club density, open mic venues, Google ratings, and venue variety. The results will surprise you.

Every city claims to have the best comedy scene. We measured it.

Using data from 384 comedy clubs across 221 American cities, ComedyClubFinder built a composite index to rank the funniest cities in the country — not by reputation, not by history, but by the actual density, quality, and variety of live comedy available to residents today.

The results surprised us. New York and Los Angeles — the cities most associated with stand-up comedy — ranked 14th and 13th respectively. The cities that topped the list are the ones where comedy is woven into the fabric of everyday life: where the ratio of comedy clubs to residents is highest, where open mic culture thrives alongside professional venues, and where audiences consistently rate their experiences at or above 4.5 stars.

How We Ranked the Cities

The ComedyClubFinder Comedy Index is a composite score built from five weighted metrics, each designed to capture a different dimension of what makes a city's comedy scene genuinely exceptional.

| Metric | Weight | What It Measures |

|---|---|---|

| Comedy clubs per 100,000 residents | 35% | Scene density — how accessible live comedy is to the average resident |

| Open mic venues per 100,000 residents | 20% | Grassroots depth — the pipeline of emerging talent and community participation |

| Average Google rating across all venues | 20% | Quality — audience satisfaction with the actual experience |

| Total club count (absolute) | 15% | Scene size — the raw number of options available |

| Venue variety score | 10% | Diversity — the balance between ticketed shows and open mic nights |

Only cities with three or more comedy clubs were included to ensure statistical validity. Population data is from the 2023 U.S. Census Bureau city estimates. Google ratings are sourced directly from the Google Places API via ComedyClubFinder's venue database, which covers 97.4% of the 384 clubs in the dataset.

Each metric was normalized to a 0–100 scale before weighting, ensuring that no single dimension — like New York's sheer volume of clubs — could dominate the composite score at the expense of the others.

The Top 25 Funniest Cities in America

1. Greenville, South Carolina — Score: 65

Greenville is the most surprising entry on this list, and the data makes the case clearly. With a population of just 70,635, the city supports three comedy clubs — giving it a density of 4.25 clubs per 100,000 residents, the highest of any city in the dataset. All three venues host open mic nights, and the average Google rating across Greenville's comedy scene is 4.5 stars. For a mid-sized Southern city, this represents a remarkable investment in live comedy infrastructure relative to its size. Browse comedy clubs in Greenville.

2. Burbank, California — Score: 54

Burbank's comedy scene benefits enormously from its proximity to the entertainment industry. Home to NBC Studios, Warner Bros., and Disney, the city has cultivated a dense cluster of comedy venues that serve both industry professionals and local audiences. With 2.9 clubs per 100,000 residents and an average rating of 4.6 stars, Burbank punches well above its weight class. Two of its three clubs host open mic nights, making it one of the most accessible cities for aspiring comedians on the West Coast. Browse comedy clubs in Burbank.

3. Richmond, Virginia — Score: 45

Why New York and Los Angeles Ranked Lower Than Expected

The most common reaction to this list is surprise at seeing New York (14th) and Los Angeles (13th) ranked below cities like Greenville and Burbank. The explanation lies in the methodology's emphasis on density over absolute size.

New York has 22 comedy clubs — more than any other city in the dataset — and 13 open mic venues. But those 22 clubs serve a population of 8.3 million, yielding a density of just 0.26 clubs per 100,000 residents. By that measure, a New Yorker is statistically less likely to live within walking distance of a comedy club than a resident of Greenville, South Carolina.

This is not a criticism of New York's comedy scene, which is unquestionably the deepest and most historically significant in the country. The Comedy Cellar, Gotham Comedy Club, and Caroline's on Broadway are world-class venues. But they serve a city of eight million people. The cities that rank highest on this index are the ones where comedy has achieved genuine community penetration — where the average resident has real, accessible options for live comedy on any given weekend.

The Open Mic Capital: Austin, Texas

Among all cities in the dataset, Austin stands out for one metric above all others: open mic density. Six of its nine clubs host open mic nights, giving it the highest open mic-to-total-club ratio of any major city in the top 10. This reflects Austin's deep commitment to nurturing emerging comedy talent — the same ethos that has made it one of the most important cities in American music.

Austin's open mic scene feeds directly into its professional circuit. Several nationally touring comedians have cited Austin as the city where they developed their stage presence. Find open mic nights in Austin or browse all US open mic venues.

Methodology Notes and Data Limitations

Population data is from the 2023 U.S. Census Bureau city population estimates. We use city proper populations, not metropolitan statistical area (MSA) populations. Club data is sourced from ComedyClubFinder's venue database of 384 clubs across 43 states. Google ratings are from the Google Places API (97.4% coverage). Variety score measures the balance between ticketed shows and open mic nights — a 50/50 split scores highest.
